Also note that we would truly appreciate any parent volunteers that would like to come in and help out during our "Immigration Role Play" listed on Day 5! Please let us know if you can make it in, and if you have any questions, please contact us!

Day 2 of Lesson Plan:

Sharing our Family History

Today students will be sharing their family history with their classmates.
  • Students will take turns locating the country where their family originated from and will be provided with small pin flags that they will use to mark where their family came from. Students may have more than one pin flag to place on the map.
  • Students will have the opportunity to see where everyone's family originated from, and the chance to discuss how this effects New York State history.

Day 3 of Lesson Plan:

Ellis Island

It's now time to learn a little bit about Ellis Island and the role it played in Immigration in the United States.

1. Let's start off by watching the following video:
http://www.brainpopjr.com/socialstudies/americanhistory/ellisisland/

2. Now, watch the video a second time and take notes as you go. Feel free to watch this video as many times as you need to. When you have collected all the 'important information', post your notes on our discussion board, so that we can all share each others thoughts and comments! Number your notes as you go along, and let's see who takes the most notes.

3. Using the handout provided, work in small groups and discuss the question:
"Why might people move?" Can you come up with 6 (or more) answers to this question?
Jot down some notes, and be prepared for our class discussion in a few minutes!

4. Next, we will be watching this video, with voices from people that actually came to America through Ellis Island:

5. Pack your suitcase!

Homework Assignment: (see printout in file located in #3 above).
You are to pretend that you are leaving your homeland to move to America. You have been provided with one small suitcase to pack all the belongings that you will be bringing with you. Everything else you must leave behind. Determine what you will bring, and pack these items into the suitcase provided. Be prepared to share/discuss the contents of your suitcase with your classmates tomorrow.

NOTES: Please review the items that you will be packing in your suitcase with your parent/guardian before bringing them into school.
Do NOT bring items of value or items that your parent/guardian does not feel should be brought into school. If there is something that you would like to bring, please write it on a piece of paper, and save the amount of space needed in your suitcase for that item.

For example: If there is a photo album that you feel you need to bring with you on your journey, you could write "Photo Album" on a piece of paper and put that piece of paper into your suitcase. You MUST save space in your suitcase for the item that you have written on the piece of paper. If you would like, you could find something the same basic size (like an empty cereal box), attach the piece of paper that you just wrote, pretend that it is the photo album, and place it into your suitcase.

Day 4 of Lesson Plan:

Suitcases and Passports

Don't forget to bring in the suitcase you packed! Today we are sharing the contents of our suitcases with our classmates, and learning about passports!!!

Day 5 of Lesson Plan:

Immigration Role Play

This is the day that student's will be embarking on their Immigration journey to America. Any parents that would like to come into the classroom and volunteer to help role play the parts of the Immigration Officials, Translators, Health Officials, and other important people that immigrants meet along their journey would be truly appreciated! Please contact us ahead of time and let us know if you will be available to participate on our big day!

Days 6 and 7 of Lesson Plan:

Quilt Square

  • The teacher will share the process of choosing different colored and patterned papers to create an 8 inch square, and then share the process of choosing pieces of information collected from the family interview conducted on the first day of the Immigration unit.
  • Students will decide which information to use on their quilt and where to place it.
  • Students will share their quilt block with the entire class as they hang them to assemble a full class quilt.

Day 8 of Lesson Plan:

Letters to Home

We will be starting this lesson by discussing the book: When Jessie Came Across the Sea by Amy Hest
Other books with stories of other immigrants will be available for the students to view.

Our final project for this unit is titled "A Letter Home":

Imagine that it is 1892, and you have just arrived in America. You came through Ellis Island with your one small suitcase, and you left some (if not all) of your family in your homeland. What was your journey like? What did you see? What happened on Ellis Island? As you look inside your suitcase, you find the paper and pencil that your family packed for you, and you know that your family is waiting to hear from you. As this new immigrant, write a letter to a family member of your choosing, and tell them about your journey.
See the attached file for further information on this assignment.
